Truman's decision lacked the support of the American people.
Americans like Elizabeth Wood voiced their opinions on MacArthur's firing to Truman. This is from a letter Elizabeth Wood sent to Truman, “Our far-eastern policy must protect either the rights of free nations or British and Communists interests. Without regard to the preferences of most Americans, you have chosen to support the latter." She felt that the president put all the work and fighting that has been put into Japan for the past five years to waste. In addition she stated, “Your dismissal of Douglas MacArthur confirms your devotion to Communist Russia and Socialist England" and “You have fired a man whose first and whole devotion has been to the best Interest of our country."

Many American were angered by Truman's relief of MacArthur. “Republicans and American fans of MacArthur were very upset by their hero's dismissal; Republicans nearly brought impeachment hearings against Truman”. Truman's decision caused many people to turn against him. “In a poll, 69% of the country backed MacArthur. There were calls to impeach Truman.” Many American people believed Truman was so wrong in firing MacArthur that they wanted to impeach him and go to court against Truman and his actions- everyone loved a good war hero who was looking out for his country and for others.
