We, Negeen Fathi and Erin Julian chose this topic of the Korean War because Erin's grandfather was in the war, so we figured that we would have a lot of resources to use. Her grandfather received a purple heart and we wanted to include something about that in our project, but as we moved further along we strayed away from that specific topic, because the idea cannot be put into a thesis. We decided to focus more on MacArthur and his career in the war. As our research progressed we finalized our decision regarding our thesis and made it that there was no proper justification in Truman’s decision regarding MacArthur’s firing.
Negeen conducted her research by beginning with very broad, general information on the Korean War and then narrowing it further down to MacArthur’s firing. During the first round of research she used five basic sources describing what happened throughout the war and what happened after, with a little bit of information on US involvement. As she moved forward to the second round of research she took notes on six sources focusing a bit more on MacArthur and a specific battle he led and also the effect the war had on America. When Negeen began the final round of notes and we decided our thesis, she took notes on seven sources (four primary sources and three secondary sources). In this round of notes, she really focused on MacArthur’s firing, reasons for his firing and why it was not exactly justified.
Erin conducted her research by starting with five sources that focused on the Major Generals that served during the Korean war. During the second round, i decided to focus in on General Douglas MacArthur because she had previous knowledge of him. Once we finalized a thesis about MacArthur's firing, Erin focused in on the viewpoints of the American people, MacArthur, and Truman regarding the incident.
We both conducted research by beginning with a very broad, general view on the Korean War and then focusing more on specific aspects of the war like the battles, the US influence and then narrowing it further down to MacArthur’s firing by our third round of research. During the first round of research we used very basic sources describing what happened throughout the war and what happened after, with a little bit of information on US involvement. As we moved forward to the second round of research we took notes on sources focusing a bit more on MacArthur and a specific battle he led and also the effect the war had on America. When we began the final round of notes and we decided our thesis, we took notes on many sources sources (including both primary sources and secondary sources). In the last round, we really focused on MacArthur’s firing, reasons for his firing and why it was not exactly justified.
With all our notes finally completed, we decided that our project type will be a website. The website will allow us to express the point we want to prove better than any of the other project types. It will also allow us to use one source to share the information in a uniform way. We both believe a website allows the creator at add more information without stuffing it all on the pages of a research paper or poster and that is why a website was our top choice. Through this website, we will convey why there was no justification in Truman’s decision
